Hillypilly the Missionary Filly: The Electric Alligator Pear
Hillypilly the Missionary Filly: The Electric Alligator Pear
A young boy’s fascination with 3-D mobile platforms bridges a multi-generational love for farming avocados with today’s environmental challenges to the benefit of his family and community.

His parents did not understand why he would rather play games on the screen, enjoy extreme sports or go surfing than traveling to soak up new sights on a mini-vacation.

Taking time away from avocado farming to travel by boat to see a statue staring off into space was not Adonijah’s idea of fun. He would rather enter his carefully selected dream world inside a computer to let his imagination soar. But, Mexico is king of growing avocado – also called alligator pears and green gold– for the world.

Hillypilly is no ordinary filly; she is a horse with a very important mission. This is the story of a talented horse that travels the world sharing great news and good tidings. Children see Hillypilly after they pray at night to God asking for His care. God tells the angels to point the way for Hillypilly to go, and what He wants the blue-roan missionary filly to share. This time she is in Mexico.

FYI:
The Bradford deciduous pear tree is grown more for its ornamental value than fruit production. It belongs to the same family as the apple Maloideae and genus Pyrus. Botanically, it is known as Pyrus calleryana. The Bradford is the oldest pear tree, and can be found with its beautiful spring flowers enlivening many landscapes. Bradford is one of the most well-known flowering tree varieties. Following are some Bradford pear tree facts.

Bradford Pear Tree Facts
The Bradford pear tree, with its wide, rounded branching, is actually as the name suggests, ‘pear shaped’. The tree is a fast grower, and when watered and fed well in its early years, will grow very quickly, reaching a height of 12 to 15 feet in just five years. The tree can grow up to 50 feet in height with a 30 feet wide spread. It thrives in most soils, climatic and environmental conditions similar to the Pacific coast. Bradford can easily be classified as a shade tree that bears very attractive white snowy flowers in clusters in spring. It turns even more dramatic when its bright flossy green color foliage turns yellow to red to purple color in fall.

Falling Spring Falls – Spring

Falling Spring Falls - Spring
I hope spring isn’t yet this far along at this location, as this was taken over a month later last year, but spring is coming early, after an unusually mild winter in our part of the country. Already, Bradford pear trees in the Richmond area are taking on a greenish cast as emerging leaves compete with the white blossoms to impart their look to the trees; soon, the leaves will win and the blossoms will be gone.

I’ve posted two vertical shots of this waterfall, but had passed over the horizontal photos from the visit, until today. I like the fact that this shows the mountain setting of the falls to better advantage. This view of Falling Spring Falls is from a small overlook separated from US 220 by only a guardrail, about nine miles north of Covington, Virginia, in Alleghany County. Even with a pretty solid cloud cover, I used both the 8x neutral density filter and polarizer. The falls are fed by 85-degree (F) water from Warm Spring Cave a few miles upstream; as a result, winter shots can be interesting because the falls keep flowing, but ice builds up at the base. Accounts differ on the height of this free-fall section, so when preparing his book Waterfalls of Virginia and West Virginia (Menasha Ridge Press, undated), Kevin Adams measured the drop at about 70 feet. Best if viewed in the light box.
